Thoughts on Submissions

Well hello there!

Today, here, it is so cold! It is the perfect weather for bundling down, embracing the cozy, and having a hot drink with loved ones (including yourself!).

Myself, I am sitting with a coffee before a heater, with blankets around me. I feel so lucky!

Right now, the submission period for Joyfully Wondrous is about halfway through (it ends on the coming Monday!). I have begun answering emails and reading submissions (two things I procrastinate on!) and it is always such a fun and adventurous thing to do! Inspired by that, I thought I’d share a thought or two on Submissions.

Sending in your pieces to a call for publishing is such a vulnerable act. When a person creates something, they become attached to it. It carries their imprint, a little piece of their heart and soul. To send this out is like giving it wings, a chance to fly to another’s nest for… well, in the publishing world it’s to be marked up and graded, so to speak!

Now, I find this to be such a hard part for the creatives, and one that I do my best to handle with utmost delicacy. You see, the unfortunate thing is that publishers are often looking for something specific. In my case with Joyfully Wondrous, I am looking for a certain type of uplifting and cheerful pieces.

So, this means that even though a person sends in a wonderful piece, if it’s not the right theme, one must turn it away. As a creative, this can be so crushing! Myself, the few times I sent out pieces, having them declined was absolutely crushing!

When I answer emails regarding submissions, I try as often as my energy and time permits me to offer uplifting and constructive feedback on the pieces sent in. I feel this is important,Β  as creatives we ought to be supporting each other and building each other up, as well as learning to see the value in different views and approaches and styles. Personally, this is one thing that I really enjoy about the submissions periods is just that: seeing the huge variety of styles out there and being wowed by it all.

So, all that to say, sending pieces out to be published is a very hard thing to do! I appreciate every time someone sends me a piece, as it shows they have placed their trust in me, even just a little bit. And to that, I say thank you! 😊 I hope that everyone gets their pieces published and “out there” to be seen and loved, even if I can’t be the one to do it all!

Anyways, I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the week! Take care, and don’t forget the submission period ends on Monday!!! πŸ₯°
